If you have paid good money to get hair extensions, you want to ensure that they last for as long as possible. How you care for your extensions will directly impact how long they last, which is why you should educate yourself on how to take care of them.
1. Change Your Pillowcases
First, you are going to want to change out your pillowcase. Buy a silk pillowcase. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase will help to protect your hair from getting dry and will help to prevent tangles. Alternatively, you can also wrap a silk scarf around your head before you go to sleep, which will help protect your hair as you sleep if you don't want to sleep on a silk pillow cloth.
2. Use Pigtail Braids
Second, don't just lay down with loose flowing hair. You also shouldn't tie it up in a top knot or a low bun. Both of those choices will leave your hair matted and tangled. Instead, you should divide your hair in two and braid your hair loosely. With two pigtail braids, you will be able to sleep comfortably, and your hair will be protected.
3. Brush Your Hair
Third, it is essential to brush your hair out regularly. Brush your natural hair to get it from getting all tangled up. Then, brush your extensions as well. If you brush regularly, you can do so in a gentle manner. You will also be able to prevent your hair from getting tangled up through regular brushing, which will help your extensions last longer.
4. Limit Product Usage
Fourth, you will want to limit how many products you use on your hair and on your extensions.
For example, if you have straight extensions, you should use a little dry shampoo on a limited basis and a heat protectant if you decide to style the extensions with a heat tool. If an extension gets tangled, use a defrizzing product to help you brush and keep the extensions looking smooth. Just don't go overboard, and only use products when necessary.
Or, if you have curly extensions, use a little curl mousse or curl-defining gel as needed to get the definition that you are looking for with your curls.
5. Limit Heat
Fifth, you will want to limit the amount of heat you use on your extensions. Just like your natural hair, your extensions can get damaged by excessive heat. Allow your extensions to air dry when you wash them and limit the hot styling tools you use. If possible, use not-heat methods to style your hair.
These are just a few ways to take care of your hair extensions, and it's important to speak with a salon about other ways to keep them in good condition.
